Dr Samuel Bolitho is a Sydney Neurologist with sub-specialised training in movement disorders and Parkinson’s Disease. He brings a rare mix of medical, neurological and computational neuroscience expertise to his role, as well as a wealth of experience in biomedical engineering.
Prior to studying medicine and neurology, Dr Bolitho initially completed an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering at UNSW, graduating with 1st Class Honours. This provided Dr Bolitho with a unique fundamental understanding and training in the design, analysis and maintenance of mechanical and electrical systems, which lends itself to neurology which is the medical speciality of diagnosing and treating disorders of the nervous system causing impaired electrical signaling.
Dr Bolitho currently works as a Consultant Neurologist at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney and regional NSW, with expertise in Deep Brain Stimulation and other Device Assisted Therapies for Parkinson’s Disease, dystonia and tremor syndromes.
Recently he was awarded a PhD through the Brain and Mind Centre at the University of Sydney, exploring the use of novel devices and technology in sleep disorders and Parkinson’s Disease. This work included over 15 peer reviewed journal articles. Dr Bolitho’s empiric research, which was a part of his PhD, was editorialised in the Movement Disorders Journal and was included in the Highlights in the Field session at a recent American Academy of Neurology international conference. His research has also been presented at multiple International Movement Disorders Society and ANZAN scientific meetings.
Dr Bolitho has an strong commitment to making a difference in the domains of individual and public health, and strongly believes in the provision of good medical service within the public system. He believes there is a social obligation to engage in research projects that increase the knowledge and scientific base informing excellence in medical service, and which benefit the community.
